![]() Frequently, you’ll encounter a cluster of signs or diagrams that need to be arranged in a certain way so that you Pedestrian can traverse through them. On top of this, however, is the jigsaw-puzzle layer that I already mentioned. But given we’ve already accepted the idea of a sentient silhouette, it’s probably best to go with it.Īnyway, so far, so Pedestrian. “Lasers” generally aren’t included alongside speed limits and one-way-systems as things people in cities need to worry about. How all these things got into the signage of a standard urban centre, I don’t know. You can also transition between different signs by passing through doors and climbing/descending ladders. There are ledges to jump across, boxes to push, and even lasers and Super Meat Boy-style saw-blades to avoid. Here, the Pedestrian is a familiar platform game. The first is found inside each individual sign. You’ll hop across blueprints, post-it-notes, road-signs, and even traffic lights.Īs I mentioned, there are two separate layers to the Pedestrian’s puzzling. Choosing either a male or female pedestrian, you must guide your symbolic abstraction through the signs, diagrams, and other visual aids of a bustling city centre. You assume control of the little human silhouettes often seen on Pedestrian crossings or bathroom doors (by which I mean regular, normal public bathrooms, not the kind you’ll see in a hipster café where the figures are riding penny-farthings or something). ![]() If anything, The Pedestrian has the opposite problem, and could probably give the many ideas it has greater room to breathe. Of course, the risk with such gimmickry is that the game becomes over-reliant on it or runs out of ideas too quickly. It’s a mechanical gimmick that instantly draws you in, like Superliminal’s perspective puzzling, or Portal’s portals. Press F at any moment while playing the Pedestrian, and the game suddenly switches from a fairly standard jumping game into a dynamic jigsaw puzzle, letting you move the individual pieces of that particular stage around, pulling them apart, shuffling them around them, and connecting them back together. The individual “levels” in this delightful little creation don’t just contain puzzles, they are puzzles. ![]() I don’t think a game ever interpreted the term “puzzle-platformer” quite so literally as the Pedestrian.

But most of the time, given program shares a handful of them. I imagine using e.g a graphic design app without mouse could be problematic and inefficient. Of course, not every piece of software has shortcuts, and that's absolutely fine. The reason I'm writing this article is that I see a field for improvement when it comes to performance during "standard" - mostly mouse-based - navigation. Prefix for given shortcut may differ based on the operating system. Most of them should work in other - webkit based - browsers too. Resist this urge! I guarantee whatever you're trying to do is possible – and ultimately quicker – if you persist with the keyboard. In this post, I'm going to use the Firefox browser's shortcuts as an example. You'll be sorely tempted to switch back to your old faithful mouse to get things done. But to do that, you've got to actively wean yourself off the mouse. It's a shame more applications don't go out of their way to make keyboard shortcuts more discoverable. I remember when mice were new I'd never want to go back to the bad old days of keyboard-only interfaces. But it will pay off down the road: you'll spend less time mousing around, and more time getting things done. Stop for a moment, resist taking the easy way out with the mouse, and force yourself to learn at least one new keyboard shortcut per day. But in 2011, Bichir received the opportunity to lead A Better Life, an independent film about an undocumented immigrant in Los Angeles working as a landscaper and attempting to provide for his son. Demián Bichir had been a star in Mexican films and Telenovelas but was most known to American audiences for his role as Tijuanan mayor/drug cartel kingpin/love interest on the show Weeds. Where so many of these nominations seem to be just way to include a popular and respected actor, Weaver's solo nomination is one of those great stories honoring a deserved nominee from a small but worthy film.Ī great part can do wonders for a movie star, but taking a chance on someone less known can deliver something extraordinary. She seems ordinary and sweet and just loves her sons and then she starts kissing them on the mouth." Weaver's impact was so great, not only did she secure the Oscar nomination, she has worked on more mainstream and American films, including receiving a second Oscar nomination two years later for Silver Linings Playbook. I think that’s part of the interest that you find out gradually just how bad she is. As she relayed to Collider: "The temptation would have been for me to jump in and make her a villain from the beginning which wouldn’t be half as interesting a story. Her one film to make any waves stateside was 1975's Panic at Hanging Rock, which contributed to launching the career of Peter Weir ( The Truman Show, Dead Poets Society.) In Animal Kingdom, Weaver plays the matriarch of an Australian crime family and expertly toes the line between a caring, affectionate mother and grandmother and a devious sociopath, and masterfully playing that contradiction. Jacki Weaver had been a working actress on stage and screen since the 1970s exclusively in Australia. If the performance you give in the movie brings international attention to a small crime thriller from another continent and that carries you all the way to an Oscar nomination, you definitely get to make this list. Stanley Tucci gives an Oscar-worthy performance as Paul Child, Julia's husband, but Tucci was snubbed in favor of his performance in The Lovely Bones, for which he was the film's only nomination. Meryl Streep has been nominated for a lot of Oscars, and this one is one of her most deserved. She plays up the humanity of a woman making something of her life in a new setting, the perseverance Child had, and the heart in her loving marriage. With the help of a script penned by the incomparable Nora Ephron, Streep is far from a cartoon character like Child. This proves not to be an issue for Meryl Streep in Julie & Julia. She has been the subject of parody for years, most famously by Dan Aykroyd on Saturday Night Live. Julia Child, with her gargantuan height, boisterous gestures, and highly distinctive voice, almost comes off as a cartoon character. There is a fine line between impersonation and becoming the character of a real-life figure. Sometimes this is lobbed as a critique at the Oscars' expense, but in fairness, the challenge can be noteworthy. Real-life figures are a challenge the Academy often rewards actors for. Attempting to understand the complications is what led to the most lauded performance of Whitaker's career. When reflecting on the role, Whitaker recalls not viewing Idi Amin as a villain but looking into the layers that made up who Amin was and, in spite of it all, found a way to have sympathy for him. Whitaker is able to shift between the charismatic leader that charms the people all the way to an abhorrent tyrant having his friend strung up by hooks and every aspect of Amin in between. This all changed with 2006's The Last King of Scotland, in which Whitaker played Ugandan dictator Idi Amin. Forest Whitaker has been working in the entertainment industry both on-screen and behind the camera since the early 80s and despite being a successful and respected actor, his only role to receive major award buzz before his Oscar nomination was playing Charlie Parker in Clint Eastwood's Bird, for which Whitaker won Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival. Peter O'Toole in Venus, Will Smith in The Pursuit of Happiness, and Ryan Gosling in Half Nelson all gave performances strong enough to get the film noticed, but the same can be said of the winner. At the 79th Academy Awards, four of the five best actor nominees were the sole nomination received by their films. This was a disaster! (Thankfully, in my SSD article I recommended to use drives that did not need a TRIM enabler.) The Fix Anyone who did this now found their SSD would not boot in Yosemite. Many people chose option 2, to use an SSD with TRIM and run the hack, but in Yosemite all TRIM enablers/hacks were disabled by Apple. (2) Use an SSD that needs TRIM but run a hack that turns on trim support in OS X. Here are some SSD’s that work better without TRIM: (1) Install an SSD that doesn’t need TRIM. Apple and TRIMĪpple have not allowed TRIM support unless you have an Apple installed SSD Drive. That means if you want to install your own SSD into a mac, you have 2 options. If you have an OWC SSD, though, you don’t need TRIM. The SandForce controller in our SSDs takes care of this “garbage collection  In fact, enabling TRIM could actually hurt the performance and reliability of your OWC SSD, rather than help it. It’s a bit like having your own personal secretary to do your filing. For those SSD’s it’s actually better to keep TRIM turned off and leaving it all to the secretary, so to speak.įor example this is what OWC say about TRIM: So the computer says ‘delete this page’ and the SSD does it automatically. Others have chosen to deal with deleting data in a different way. Some SDD’s are enabled to work with TRIM. In order for TRIM to work the SSD must have ‘TRIM’ support, and the computer must have ‘TRIM’ support. TRIM is a command that allows an SSD drive to remove (delete) 1 page at a time instead of a whole folder at a time. ![]() In fact it’s slow to deal with writing large chunks of data. With an SSD drive they are different and so it’s much faster to do it 1 page at a time. This is because spinning hard disks deal with huge chunks of data called blocks, which are like a folder, and they can’t deal with anything smaller than a block of data. They spin so fast and the blocks are so big that doing an entire folder at a time is the fastest way to do it. If you think of data as papers in a filing cabinet, to remove an empty page (if you were an old hard drive) you would need to take out an entire folder of papers, then find and remove one page, and then put back the entire folder. Trim is a command your computer gives to your SSD hard disk to tell it to delete a very small amount of data. This results in a reduction of the number of erase cycles on the flash memory and enables higher performance during writes. But if you have used an SSD that needs TRIM, read on to find out about the problem and how to fix it. The advantage of the TRIM command is that it enables the SSD’s GC to skip the invalid data rather than moving it, thus saving time not rewriting the invalid data.
